The Dark Side of Surfing
(The part nobody warns you about until it’s too late)

If you know someone who surfs, you already know: these people are basically missionaries. They want you to try it—not because they’re generous, but because misery loves company.
So here are very real reasons why you should NEVER start surfing:

1. Your drama supply runs out.
If you thrive on chaos, arguments, and emotional rollercoasters… stay far, FAR away.
Surfing gives you peace, clarity, and a functioning nervous system.
Terrible idea.

2. Your wardrobe gets destroyed.
Remember when you owned normal clothes?
Yeah, say goodbye.
Your new closet: swimsuits or boardshorts

3. Goodbye bad habits, hello accidental self-improvement.
Surfing gently but aggressively removes:
Hangovers, Self-sabotage, Staying up until 3 a.m.
Suddenly you wake up early on purpose.
Red flag behavior.

4. You become a full-time weather nerd.
You once had hobbies.
Now you refresh wind, tide and swell charts like it’s the stock market.
Your friends think you’re speaking in riddles when you say things like:
“Rising tide, 14-second period, offshore at sunrise.”

5. Your priorities get… skewed.
Work meeting? “I’ll do it later.”
Date night? “Sorry, it’s glassy right now.”
Savings account? “I bought a new board instead.”
Respectfully: your life is over.

I participated again in a two-day basic lifeguard training today, and Janice from ProSayulita, who organized it, asked me what it was like to take the course for a second time.

Honestly, I think it was necessary. The content—both theory and practice—was structured a bit differently this time. Some topics were covered more in depth, for example the training on how to rescue someone from the water who may have a cervical spine injury. It was really interesting! And some topics were new for me!

My first course with ProSayulita was in May, and I was able to learn new things, refresh old knowledge, and also find motivation—like realizing that I need more training to improve my swimming speed.

The most important lesson I take away each time is that the best form of prevention is having this knowledge, and warning people in time—for example those who don’t understand the currents or who belong to at-risk groups.

I also gained more confidence in handling emergency situations, because refreshing my knowledge and practicing in real scenarios helps me feel prepared and secure in knowing that I can and should help.

A huge thank-you to Janice and her team! ProSayulita not only offers lifeguard courses but also tests the water quality in Sayulita to raise awareness about issues and help protect the community from contaminated water and the illnesses it can cause.

I also like to mention: It’s always motivating to work with people who share the same mindset: wanting to help wherever they can. Thanks Sayulita Community!

Millones de niños y niñas en todo el mundo sufren diariamente debido a la pobreza, la violencia, la falta de educación y la falta de oportunidades. Más de 330 millones viven en pobreza extrema y aquí en México muchos enfrentan condiciones laborales peligrosas, violencia y pérdidas dolorosas. Esta realidad es dura y nos llama a asumir nuestra responsabilidad.

Aquí es donde entra nuestro proyecto Almar. No solo ofrecemos clases de skate y surf, sino que creamos un espacio donde los niños pueden desarrollar su personalidad, aprender que no están solos y ser parte de una comunidad fuerte. Nuestras actividades abren puertas a nuevos mundos, muestran a los niños sus posibilidades y les ayudan a confiar en sí mismos y en el futuro.

Pero esto solo es posible cuando las personas se unen – personas que aportan su tiempo, energía y corazón. Los voluntarios y quienes nos apoyan son la base de nuestro proyecto. No solo ayudan en las clases, sino que construyen puentes, acompañan personalmente y permiten que ayudemos más allá del deporte.

Con cada crecimiento, espero que Almar se vuelve más estable – y podemos lograr más. Por ejemplo, los últimos ingresos los invertimos directamente en compras para una familia que tiene siete cachorros (pueden verlo en nuestro highlight “Dogs”). Esto demuestra que nuestro compromiso no solo llega a los niños en la tabla, sino también a sus familias y a toda la comunidad.

when our project is all about surfing, skating, and working with local kids.

But here’s the thing: privately, we’re dog lovers.
Since living in Mexico, I’ve personally rescued, treated, and rehomed countless street dogs. My friends too!

Not as an organization — just as a human.
And I could never have done it without the help of amazing friends like @susanbowron @courtneycarolinetx @gillardinmichael and organizations like @sanpanchoanimales @sayulitanimals
Without them, none of this would be possible!

But the problem is far from over.
Most local shelters are full. Help is urgently needed.

And if you can’t donate — maybe you have 1–2 hours?
🦴 Take a dog for a beach walk.
🛠️ Volunteer at a sterilization campaign.
🏡 Offer short-term fostering.
🚗 Help with transport.
✈️ Be a flight angel.

I am so grateful to be able to live here, and that the local people have welcomed me warmly.
Recently, someone gave me a ride off the street—not even with a car, but an ATV—and helping was completely natural for her.

Today, someone gave me a ride on a motorcycle that already had another passenger. By the end, there were three women on that bike. That kind of thing only happens in Mexico! (One of the woman knew me because we, Esteban and I, rescued her kids from the ocean in Litibu about a year ago.)

I am grateful that I can have my own opinion, speak it out loud, and that people listen and appreciate me.

I am grateful that people (from my surf lesson) reach out to me, wanting to support the organization Refugee of Hope in Bucerias, because I told them about the families they help!

I am grateful that people write to me wanting to collaborate and create change together.

PARTE 2: Pienso: ¿no sería más útil enseñar primero a nadar, antes de surfear? ¿O dar clases de defensa personal, antes de subir a una patineta?

Porque sí, nadar y defenderse son habilidades fundamentales para la vida.

Estas dudas me acompañan, y las tomo en serio. No doy por hecho que nuestro proyecto “ya está bien porque sí”. Pero también creo profundamente que el skate y el surf pueden ser poderosos instrumentos de transformación.

No se trata solo de deportes. Son espacios donde se fomenta la confianza, la autodeterminación, el trabajo en equipo, la resiliencia. Quien aprende a patinar, aprende a caer y levantarse. Quien se atreve a surfear, descubre su valor. Estos espacios enseñan algo que no siempre se encuentra fácilmente: la libertad de ser, de expresarse, de crecer.

Nuestro trabajo no es de emergencia. Pero puede ser profundamente significativo.

Estoy convencida de que el trabajo social puede tener muchas formas. Que hay lugar para lo urgente *y* para lo inspirador. Que apoyar la supervivencia es esencial, pero también lo es abrir caminos hacia la autoestima, la alegría y la comunidad.

Nosotrxs no ofrecemos una salida. Pero tal vez, sí un comienzo.

We all deserve care, love, and protection.

Meet this sweet white angel -we found on the street. STILL LOOKING FOR ADOPTION OR FOSTER!

I don’t have a name for him yet. He’s a white male dog, maybe around two years old. I’ve been seeing him on the street for the past few weeks—thin and injured, always searching for food, but he can’t keep up with the bigger, stronger male street dogs. Esteban saw him begging for food on the beach near the Iberostar hotel. My friend saw him in Litibú, gave him a Nexgard, some food, and a bath. Then she dropped him off at my place, but I already have two dogs in my small apartment. So he can only sleep outside my door, where I give him food and water.

He’s safe for now — dewormed, tick-free, showered, and full of love. My friend and I took him to the vet today and here’s what he needs:

🩺 Distemper test: ✅ Negative – 600 MXN
💉 First vaccine: ✅ Done – 400 MXN
💉 Two more vaccines needed – 2 x 400 MXN
✂️ Will be spayed (donation-based)
🍖 Dog food & treats – always needed
Any other dog thingys or even money for gas (it’s not the first time my friend is driving animals in need to the vet)!

Every little bit helps. 🙏

En mi cabeza ronda constantemente la constitución de Almar para apoyar a niñas y niños de contextos vulnerables.

Nuestra propuesta: ofrecerles skate y surf como herramientas para su desarrollo. Lo hacemos porque son deportes que nos apasionan, que vivimos desde dentro, y en los que hemos encontrado crecimiento personal. Creemos que también pueden ser valiosos para otras personas.

Pero, a veces, me pregunto: ¿es esto realmente importante?

Cuando observo a otras organizaciones sin fines de lucro, veo que muchas se dedican a cubrir necesidades básicas y urgentes: apoyo económico, materiales escolares, despensas, ayuda psicológica o acompañamiento en la orientación profesional.

How can I recognize good surf lessons?

Surfing can be transformative - but only if you feel safe, respected and well guided.

Surf lessons are booming in many popular surf spots like Sayulita - but not every course offers the quality, safety or fairness it promises.

Therefore: Ask questions. Listen. Observe.

Good lessons start with a good conversation.

✅ What you should ask before booking:

1. Is the surf instructor trained - or just experienced?

The ISA certificate (International Surfing Association) is an international standard for surf lessons. It shows that basic content on safety, didactics and ethics is known.

But:

👉🏽 Not all good instructors have this certificate - e.g. because it is expensive, has to be renewed annually or is not financed by the school.

Therefore: Ask about the surfing background.
For example:

- How long have you been surfing?
- How long have you been giving lessons?
- Have you taught in different conditions?
- What kind of students have you accompanied so far?

2. What is a typical first lesson like?

A good instructor should be able to explain to you

- What you practice on the beach before you go into the water
- What the safety rules are
- What the most common beginner mistakes are
- How to recognize if you are making progress

If everything remains very vague („We’ll just see“), this is often a sign of a lack of preparation or structure.

3. When and where is a good time to surf - and why?

The answer shows whether someone knows about tides, swells, wind and safety - or simply relies on masses and times. Good instructors will explain:

- Why the morning is sometimes better
- Why low or high tide can be important
- Which spots are suitable for beginners

4. What you should pay particular attention to:

- Is there a ratio of teachers to students? (e.g. max. 1 instructor for 2 beginners)
- Is there an emergency plan, first aid knowledge, first aid kit etc.?
- How is feedback given?
- What is encouraged in the lessons - technique, fun, independence, safety?
- Are there offers for advanced learners - or is it a beginners-only program?

Por qué a veces uso el Instagram de Almar Surf & Skate
para hablar de temas que no tienen que ver directamente
con el surf en Nayarit?

Porque creemos que el surf no ocurre en una burbuja.
Porque no podemos hablar de comunidad, inclusión y libertad
sin mirar también lo que pasa fuera de nuestras olas.

Últimamente leí que se canceló una competencia de la WSL
porque se quería excluir a surfistas israelíes.

Y me pregunté: y surfistas palestinos?

Me puse a investigar – y encontré el Gaza Surf Club.
Una pequeña comunidad en Gaza, justo frente al mar,
que quiere surfear.
A pesar del bloqueo. A pesar de las bombas.
A pesar del hambre y del miedo.

Incluso hay una película sobre ellxs –
por ahora solo encontré el tráiler.
Pero ya eso me conmovió profundamente.

En Almar no solo queremos compartir tablas.
Queremos compartir perspectivas, historias y empatía.

Si decimos que el surf es para todxs,
entonces también tenemos que hablar de quienes
no tienen acceso.

Como muchxs ya saben, actualmente en la Franja de Gaza
hay una catástrofe humanitaria.
Lxs niñxs están muriendo de hambre.
Las cifras oficiales hablan de entre 50.000 y 55.000 personas muertas.
Pero expertxs estiman que la cifra real podría superar los 100.000 – muchas personas están desaparecidas o no fueron registradas oficialmente.

Y me pregunto:
¿Qué valor tiene la libertad si no es para todxs?

No podemos hablar de inclusión
y al mismo tiempo callar
cuando pueblos enteros se están ahogando –
no en el agua,
sino en el silencio político del mundo.

No basta con surfear desde el privilegio.
Tenemos que alzar la voz
por quienes no tienen plataforma.

No comparto esto porque tenga respuestas.
Lo comparto porque no podemos seguir mirando hacia otro lado.

Two-Day Lifeguard Course
I’m small, not athletic, and not particularly strong – and yet, over the past two days, I learned how I could help save a life in an emergency thanks to the theory and practice we covered.

It wasn’t a full certification course, but an introduction – a hands-on dive into basic water rescue techniques and essential safety principles. Still, it was intense, eye-opening, and reminded me how much responsibility we actually carry as a surf community.

What stuck with me the most:
The best rescue is prevention.
So many dangers can be avoided simply through awareness, knowledge, and clear communication.

As surfers, we often know the waves, the currents, and the local conditions better than anyone. Sometimes we can tell right away when someone shouldn’t be going in the water – maybe they’re dehydrated, drunk, or just unaware of what they’re walking into.
If we speak up and stay alert, we can help prevent things from going wrong.

And even if we’re not trained lifeguards:
Having a surfboard within reach and some basic first aid knowledge can make a huge difference.

& what truly made this course special was the group:
So many like-minded people who weren’t just there to learn – but to support one another. We encouraged each other, shared laughs and challenges, and genuinely looked out for everyone’s well-being.
Even beyond the course, people made sure lost items were returned, trash was properly disposed of, and nothing was left behind on the beach.
It wasn’t just about knowledge – it was about community.

I’m deeply grateful for the work of @prosayulita_official and the local lifeguards – for their commitment, their openness, and the way they bring the community into this shared responsibility.

If I had done the full training, I probably would’ve failed at least once as the slowest swimmer 😄– but that’s exactly why it’s so worth diving in.

ALMAR – A Heart Project with Ups and Downs

This season has been financially tough for us, making it more difficult to continue what we love: bringing joy and new experiences to local children through surf and skate lessons.

Maybe you’ve noticed it’s been quiet around here lately — not because we’ve stopped, but because we’ve taken time to reflect, regroup, and process.

Last year, many of our clients came from nearby places like the Iberostar Resort, where we had strong local visibility. Unfortunately, after a failed collaboration with a café from that area – where I truly believed we shared values of friendship and mutual support – things changed.

I poured time and energy into growing their social media, creating their exclusive menu, and supporting the integration of surf lessons. In return, I was promised support – like implementing a donation option or helping me get rash guards etc. None of those promises were kept.

When I tried to address this openly and respectfully, I faced rejection. One of the owners blocked me, removed me from group chats, and treated me disrespectfully last time I entered the cafe.

Since this failed communication, they’ve positioned themselves as competition, and we no longer receive clients from this area. These kinds of moments make it hard to build a nonprofit project – especially when trying to collaborate with profit-driven businesses or relying on friendships.

But what I’ve learned is this: Don’t give up. Keep going. Sometimes it just takes patience for new things to grow. 🌱

Small reminder to myself:

Children are just real. Authentic. Alive. Grateful.
They don’t think about profit or status.
They are simply present – in the moment.

In the adult world, we tend to lose sight of that.
Everything is analyzed, optimized, monetized.
And suddenly you find yourself wondering:
Is this real friendship or just a business connection?

It reminds me of the book "Momo" by Michael Ende –
and the grey men who steal people’s time,
pushing them to live faster, be more efficient.
And in all that rushing, people forget how to really live.
They forget how to truly listen.
They forget what matters.

But Momo listens.
She takes her time.
She’s fully present.
And she helps others remember how to live again.

Maybe that’s exactly what children remind us of.
And maybe that’s part of what we’re trying to do with Almar –
to show them, and ourselves, how much power there is in real life.

What we do with Almar, we do because it fills us up.
Because we love the ocean.
The sport – surfing.
Because we love to teach, to share –
and to be surrounded by smiling children
who don’t often get to visit the beach.
Children with few opportunities,
but so much joy and life inside them.

Almost all of the income we generate goes straight back into expenses.
We don’t have our own surfboards, or a surf school, or a car.
In the end, we usually break even.

But emotionally? In terms of joy, connection, energy?
We are so in the plus.

And who really wins through all of this?
The children.

They get to be outside.
In the sand. In the water. In motion.
Not spending hours in front of the TV or their phones,
like our current culture often demands.

A friend said to me yesterday:
"We all feel better when we’re outside and experiencing adventure.”
And she’s so right.
Not in the home office, not glued to screens,
but truly connected – to nature, to each other, to ourselves.

Sometimes we need to bring that sentence back to our hearts,
to remind ourselves what makes us feel alive.

Time is meant for living.
And the ocean helps us do just that.

You wanna know how was our Skatevent yesterday?

Seven children from Bucerías had the opportunity to improve their skills at the skate event yesterday – and most importantly, they had a lot of fun! 🛹💥

Despite some transport challenges at the last minute, everything worked out in the end. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any additional volunteers to help out, and we weren’t able to take photos – but trust us, the kids‘ joy was immense!

A special highlight: **Diego** from @warehousebeyond offered to provide free lessons for the kids next time. He also suggested reinvesting the funds raised back into the kids – maybe with free pizza next time? 🍕💛

I’m incredibly grateful for **Diego’s** support and can highly recommend the **Warehouse Beyond Skatepark**! It’s an amazing location for both kids and adventurous adults – and with Diego as a coach, you’re definitely in good hands. 🙌

**Conclusion for Almar**

This event has once again shown us how crucial financial support is for projects like ours. Without financial resources, we can’t afford to pay professionals like Diego or other instructors, which makes the work more challenging as we can’t always rely on volunteer support. While we deeply appreciate this type of help, things would run much more smoothly if we could pay helpers for their work.

It’s already a huge step to get the project out there and inspire people to support us. Every donation, every contribution, and every bit of help – whether financial or through spreading the word – brings us a step closer. You wanna know how was our Skatevent yesterday?

Seven children from Bucerías had the opportunity to improve their skills at the skate event yesterday – and most importantly, they had a lot of fun! 🛹💥

Despite some transport challenges at the last minute, everything worked out in the end. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any additional volunteers to help out, and we weren’t able to take photos – but trust us, the kids‘ joy was immense!

A special highlight: **Diego** from @warehousebeyond offered to provide free lessons for the kids next time. He also suggested reinvesting the funds raised back into the kids – maybe with free pizza next time? 🍕💛

I’m incredibly grateful for **Diego’s** support and can highly recommend the **Warehouse Beyond Skatepark**! It’s an amazing location for both kids and adventurous adults – and with Diego as a coach, you’re definitely in good hands. 🙌

**Conclusion for Almar**

This event has once again shown us how crucial financial support is for projects like ours. Without financial resources, we can’t afford to pay professionals like Diego or other instructors, which makes the work more challenging as we can’t always rely on volunteer support. While we deeply appreciate this type of help, things would run much more smoothly if we could pay helpers for their work.

It’s already a huge step to get the project out there and inspire people to support us. Every donation, every contribution, and every bit of help – whether financial or through spreading the word – brings us a step closer. It all starts with your positioning on the board. Lie down in the middle of your surfboard with your weight centered on your belly. Your feet should be touching the board and pointing straight back, while your head stays slightly lifted so you can see the wave ahead. Be careful not to lie too far forward (the nose will dip) or too far back (the tail will drag). Your hands should rest near your chest, ready to push off.

Once you spot the wave, start paddling hard to gain speed. When you feel the wave picking you up, stop paddling and prepare for the Pop-Up. Place your hands flat under your chest and push up with straight arms, like a push-up. Quickly bring your back knee forward under your body while sliding your front foot into position. A little late BUT I wanted to share with you how amazing the surf event on October 25th, 2024 was! In collaboration with @refugeofhopebucerias, we were able to introduce 10 kids to the world of surfing! And also a big thanks to these wonderful people:

@bren.bren.6, a waitress at Miscelánea Café in Sayulita, reached out to me before the skate event and offered her help without hesitation. It’s truly worth to meet her in person!

Kaleu, who loves channeling his energy into building projects like treehouses for kids! @kaleu_kuntur is an inspiration.

@juli_palm was also there! She has such a cool approach with kids! With @lulaiswimwear, she focuses on sustainability, and the designs aren’t just beautiful but incredibly flattering!

@pol.logonzalez, who works at @el_puente_del_beso_icecream, is a long-time surf friend with a humorous way of giving surf instructions before hitting the waves.

@vcrzo, the founder of @yeahvary.surf, is not just an amazing surf instructor for kids, but many of his clients also experience him as a fantastic surf buddy for coached lessons!!

@jorge.s.llerenas, from @chubbysurfteam, is specialized in teaching individuals who are often marginalized by society, because they get classified as overweight.

Finally, I want to give a huge thank you to @aniemonferri ! While I haven’t had the chance to meet her personally yet, I’ve seen her in action. She’s my favorite longboarder, and her business @palmeraaudiovisual is definitely worth checking out. She’s been capturing beautiful moment with her photography talent!

And the boards? @canekxion, the owner of @surfandtacossayulita, helped us by providing transportation & surfboards. I barely knew him, but I was amazed by how easily he agreed to help, saying, "Of course, take whatever you need for the kids." I’ve never experienced such generosity from any other surf school with surfboards before.

On October 15th, 2024, we held our second skate event. 🛹✨ The gaps between events are still long as we’re in the building phase and need more support to keep growing.

On October 15th, 2024, we held our second skate event. 🛹✨ The gaps between events are still long as we’re in the building phase and need more support to keep growing.

Looking back at the photos, I’m reminded of the pure joy these kids felt while skating. 🖤 Their laughter, determination, and rebellious yet loving spirits inspire us every day.

We would like this to be our long-term project and not just enjoy a one-time experience with them.

TIPS AND ADVICE FOR NEW SURFERS

SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

When you have read and understood what surfing is and how to learn it, you must set realistic expectations. Otherwise, you may have feelings of failure, frustration, and low self-esteem.

Some people can quickly learn to surf while others have slow progress. Don’t be discouraged if you belong to the latter group. Continue learning, and eventually, you will improve.

PRACTICE YOUR POP UP

A good pop-up can make your wave-riding experience great. It can get you into challenging waves, set you up for a better opening maneuver, and help you move down the line.

However, this is a skill you need to develop by practicing. It may be physically demanding, but you will get familiar with it through practice.

Whitewater is the best place to practice and perfect your pop-up technique and stance. You can catch approximately 50 waves in the whitewater within one session, giving you more pop-up practice opportunities.

GO TO A BEGINNER’S SPOT

Excellent and famous spots for surfing are usually for experienced surfers. But don’t worry because there is also a beginner’s spot that makes you learn surfing much easier and more enjoyable…
